lyrics

We stopped for the night, woke up, went outside
In Oyen, Alberta, other pairs passed by
We saw them see us
You sensed my calm so we lingered on
No way of knowing we’d be changed from then on
He came upon us

With no intro, he took your throat
With a dog damned god, I pleaded “Let go,
Please, let her go”
You’re no supposed to get too close
To a dog fight but I tried to pry them both
When I saw blood on your coat

And I’d be proud to lose a hand
In that dog’s jaw if it meant it could save you
I would learn to drive a car with one hand
If it meant I could go with you

‘Cause how could I go through life
With both my hands and not have you
To hold onto knowing I could’ve save you
Oh, I’d rather hold you with one hand than hold nothing with two

We were passing through, you could’ve passed away
In Oyen, Alberta, we were lucky that day
Two operations later
I never had to lose my hand
But I lost something more in those Badlands
Innocence you paid for
It shook us both, well it shook me
And if you felt that, I’m sorry
For the trauma
You couldn’t sleep and could only eat
Out of my hands like a baby
From her mama

And I’d be proud to lose a hand in that dog’s jaw
If it meant it could save you
I would learn to play guitar with one hand
If it meant I could play for you

‘Cause how could I go through life
With both my hands and not have you
To hold onto knowing I could’ve save you
Oh, I’d rather hold you with one hand than hold nothing with two

Now you put up your hawk when strangers cross
If it’s because of my nerves, I’ll try to be calm
But it still haunts up
You’re glaring side eyes and bearing teeth
I’ve gotta’ be the alpha so you don’t have to be
I’ll try to be stronger

‘Cause how could I go through life
With both my hands and not have you
To hold onto knowing I could’ve save you
Oh, I’d rather hold you with one hand than hold nothing with two
